In January 2023, San Francisco followed in the footsteps of Berkeley, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and the State of Virginia by deprioritizing minor traffic stops that are often used as an excuse for searching cars — stops that disproportionately impact Black and Latinx drivers and strip wealth from lower-income communities across the city while having no effect on road safety and little effect on public safety.
