How Are Visionaries Igniting Demand for a Booming Market?
Houston’s architectural landscape is an eclectic one that mirrors our diverse city. From the incredible Rice University campus right in the middle of the city to the historic heights district, Houston is a city filled with architectural gems. Because the city is growing at such a tremendous pace it’s one of the most attractive cities in the US for owners, investors, and developers. By 2020, Houston’s population is expected to grow from today’s 2.162 million to 2.52 million. In response to the boom, developers are flocking to the area and building big and building fast.
In 2019, we’ve been seeing an incredible lineup of master-planned communities and mixed use developments in the CBD and also in the growing suburbs. Architects are taking risks by creating high-density mixed-use projects that seamlessly blend different types of spaces into one development. Another popular trend is historical re-developments, like the transformation of the former Barbara Jordan Post Office into POST Houston and the recently remodeled historic C. Baldwin Hotel.
How are designers thinking about these major projects? What decisions are they making to make new developments competitive? What challenges are leading architects running into when building a booming metropolis?
