Founded in 1968 by a State legislative act, the Battery Park City Authority oversees the design, development, and maintenance of a diverse community encompassing commercial, residential, retail, and park areas across a 92-acre plot in Manhattan’s Lower West Side. One of its notable achievements includes rejuvenating a previously decaying section of the Hudson River, where old, forgotten piers once lay. This area has been transformed into 36 acres of lively public spaces and some of the nation’s most sought-after residential and commercial properties. As the district expanded, the Authority has continuously adapted to the evolving requirements of a community that now boasts thriving businesses and nearly 17,000 inhabitants. Presently, it stands as a beacon of eco-friendly urban planning. Collaborating with 100 Resilient Cities and incorporating feedback from the BPC community, the Authority’s inaugural Resilience Action Plan is geared towards fostering a diverse community, pioneering climate resilience and sustainability initiatives, and upholding the utmost quality in managing its public domains and assets.
